Now With Comments!

You know what we’re missing? Comments. Or at least, we were.

I kind of messed up, got distracted, and completely missed the time for one of my scheduled streams. Why? Well, I was busy trying to add comments (through Cactus Chat) to our fine website here. I honestly could’ve gone with the simple solution and just used their servers, or Discus, or any other comment system with an already-implemented backend system, but I didn’t. Instead, I spent the time to setup a Matrix server (feel free to send me a messsage @frosty:frostyfrog.net) and configuring it so that the comments below this post would work.

At the moment, anonymous comments are enabled. Should there be any abuse via anonymous postings, I will make logins a requirement. While I’m against creating a million accounts everywhere (who can ever keep track?!), I’m a much bigger fan of federated authentication. Matrix comes to the rescue here as it allows you to create your login on one “home” server and use it on any number of other servers. For example, if you create an account on matrix.org, you and I can still send each other messages even though I’m on frostyfrog.net. Just like how emails work on different domains!

Anyways, I think it’s cool at least. And now there’s a way for people to comment on my posts without going to another platform (such as Discord, Twitter, Guilded, or via email) to do so. I look forward to your thoughts as I work on becoming a blogger.

With much love,
Frostyfrog
